2. Apunta frases, no solo palabras sueltas

Students often ask the question ‘How can I increase my vocabulary?’. Unfortunately, there is no magic answer to this question and it definitely involves a lot of hard work. Fortunately, we have some top tips to help you with this difficult task.

1. Read and listen actively, little and often

Watching a film or your favourite series in English is fine, but it’s a very passive activity and won’t necessarily help you improve your vocabulary. It’s much better to choose short texts and really focus, noticing new words and phrases and carefully checking the meanings. Try to spend 15-20 minutes actively listening or reading twice a week (or everyday if you have time). Make it part of your routine and stick to it. Here are some examples of places where you can find texts to read or listen to.

2. Record phrases, not just single words

When you find part of a text difficult to understand try to notice what it is that’s blocking your understanding. Maybe it’s a word you’ve never seen before but more likely it’s an expression or a phrasal verb where you know one meaning for one part of it but that doesn’t make sense in the context. Try to understand the general meaning of the sentence and then isolate the new phrase to look up in the dictionary. Here are some good online bilingual and monolingual dictionaries.

3. Personalise

When you’ve recorded new words and phrases, write example sentences using them which are true for you.  For example, if you’ve just learned the word ‘frightened’ as a synonym for scared write a sentence about something you are genuinely scared of. This will help you remember vocabulary better.

4. Review

Writing down new vocabulary and example sentences is only the beginning. Make sure you review your notes regularly to help the vocabulary move from your short term memory to your long term memory. You could test yourself by making flashcards (on paper or online), or get a friend or family member to test you.

5. Use it!

Finally, we’re often nervous to use new words and phrases as we’re scared we’ll make a mistake. Be brave and try to use the vocabulary in a discussion in your English class, a conversation with a colleague or anytime you’re practising speaking. You could also try writing a story including the new vocabulary to challenge yourself.
